Richardson MountainsThe Richardson Mountains are the northernmost mountains of the Rocky Mountains. The Richardson Mountains are accessible by car, air and in winter, by snowmobile. Wild rivers flow through the area making these mountains an adventure for all types of outdoor enthusiasts. The Richardson mountains are home to:
One of the largest herds (130,000) of barren-ground caribou, the Porcupine caribou herd, migrates into the northeastern Richardson Mountains in early July. Dall Sheep are found on Mount Goodenough in the Richardson Mountains. A population of over 1,700 Dall sheep have been recorded in the area. A few grizzlies live in the Richardson Mountain range. Moose are seen at lower mountain levels. Hiking trails through the Richardson Mountains start from various locations along the Dempster Highway. Adventure trips with local outfitters can be arranged from Fort McPherson, the closest community to the scenic Richardson Mountain stretch of the Dempster Highway.
